St. John’s Episcopal Church, Kula, offers a socially conscious approach to the holiday season with its Alternative Christmas Market on Sunday, December 7. This is the first time such an event has been offered on Maui.

An Alternative Christmas Market is a fulfilling way to shop for friends and relatives. It allows us to honor them and our community by purchasing gifts from or making donations to causes that fit their values, not to mention bypassing the stress of holiday shopping and the accumulation of “stuff.” Representatives from nearly 20 local and international charities will be on hand to specially inscribe cards describing the gifts and the charities that will benefit from them to put under the tree. Gifts/donations can be made in the names of friends, family members, or co-workers.

Charities as of 11/13/14 include:

Maui Food Bank
Aloha House
Hospice Maui
Women Helping Women
Friends of the Children’s Justice Center
Maui AIDS Foundation
Maui Youth and Family Services
Malama Family Recovery Center
Somos Ohana Nicaragua
A Cup of Cold Water
Heifer Project
Neighbors Helping Neighbors
Imua Family Services
Episcopal Relief and Development
American Cancer Society
St. John’s Church Missions

Reclaiming the Christmas story of God’s love for the world and the celebration of the birth of God’s Son, Jesus Christ, the Alternative Christmas Market helps people to shop with their hearts and gives them the opportunity to participate in socially conscious gift giving. Attendees will not only be able to honor the relatives, friends, or neighbors on their gift lists, but they’ll be helping some of our most worthy non-profits.

Think outside the gift-wrapped box this holiday season. Come and shop with heart!

Admission is FREE and open to the public.
