  • Priest-in-Charge

    Fr. George Wong

George Wong joined St. John’s as our Priest-in-Charge in September 2022. He comes to us from The Church of our Saviour in Denville, NJ, where he served as Rector for five years. He was previously Rector of Holy Trinity (Ocean City, NJ).

A native of Los Angeles, CA, prior to his ordination in 2013, Rev. George had a 25-year career in corporate finance and international business development. He attended seminary at Virginia Theological Seminary, and earned a B.A. and M.B.A. in Economics from UCLA. His favorite part about being a priest is the ability to journey through life’s events big and small with members, and helping members to find spiritual meaning, greater depth and peace.

  • Associate Priest

    Rev. David Baar

The Rev. David Baar is a native of San Francisco, and holds degrees in chemistry, mathematics and divinity. As a teenager, he studied religion with his subsequent lifelong friend Alan Watts, and then became a ministry candidate from his home parish, The Church of St. Mary the Virgin in S.F. He graduated from UC Berkeley in 1959, then Church Divinity School of the Pacific in 1962; he interned several years at St. Andrew's Church, Saratoga, California, and then from 1965 to 1967 served as Chaplain to two Bishops of California, Pike and Myers, at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. He has been a "worker priest" since 1967, earning his living first at Esalen Institute as a managing director for 5 years, then as a perfume chemist and incense importer up until 2018. He has been Associate Priest at St. John's since 1981, at times also being the parish Treasurer.

David met his Australian wife Geri Aughton when he was asked to come over to Maui in 1979 to perform a wedding, where she was the bridesmaid; they were married in California later that year, and then promptly moved to Maui. As a couple, David and Geri have worked together running their business, and eventually sold that to their mainland distributors in Utah. David has two children by his first wife Lynne, both now themselves senior citizens, and five grandchildren living in California, France and Spain. He and Geri have lived in the same Maui home since arriving in 1980, where they cook and garden extensively, and where David enjoys playing his Steinway late at night when nobody's listening. He was given the instrument as a boy when a neighbor passing by heard him playing on an old upright piano that was truly worn out, and thinks of it always as an example of how great Generosity can indelibly better young peoples' lives.

  • Associate Priest

    Fr. Andrew Walmisley

Fr. Andrew Walmisley was born in England and raised both in England and in California. He received his theological degrees at Exeter and Cambridge Universities, his MA in Byzantine History at San Francisco State and his PhD in Hawaiian History at the University of Birmingham in the UK. Ordained at St. Paul’s Cathedral in 1978, he has served in parishes in London, New York, San Francisco and Berkeley and as school chaplain in San Mateo, New York and at Seabury Hall, Maui.

Fr. Andrew is married to retired cardiologist, Dr. Jonathan Allen, and they have two children on the Mainland: Mary (22) and Luke (19). His work at St. John’s, he feels, is really a happy homecoming, as he served on the staff here during his Seabury years. He is a passionate gardener, environmentalist and explorer of historic and archaeological sites in remote Maui places, particularly Kaupō (the focus of his doctoral research). He serves as Historian on the Advisory Board of the Hawaiian Islands Land Trust and is currently doing research for a comprehensive history of Maui.
